ARTIST FOCUS: Mikaël Aguirre aka Orioto
Today for our artist focus series we are really excited to bring you the excellent video game artwork of Mikaël Aguirre! Mikaël is known for creating beautiful video game art pieces that really bring out a new artistic perspective on some of our favorite video games. He is also a really fun guy to talk to, so check out his interview below!
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I’m from Paris, France, and I still live there actually.
What is your day job?
I’m freelancer with irregular video or graphic design jobs, also some photography. I’ve almost never been an employee.
How long have you been designing/illustrating? What got you interested in art?
I started having fun with Photoshop (paintshop at the time actually!) at 20 I think. I’ve always been interested in pictures and how to play with them, transform things, and form in general.
Who/what influences your art? Is there a particular person’s style that has influenced you?
Not really one. I’m looking at lots of thing every day and lots of them influence me.
What medium do you typically use when creating your art?
It’s always done on Photoshop, with a wacom bamboo.
How did you get started with your video game art series? What’s your process for choosing which game to illustrate next?
I saw a remake of Sonic 2 on the web and didn’t really like the look of it. I wanted to give my version of the game, just to see if I could do it.
I generally choose a game because it inspires me with something I would like to see. When there is a level or a scene that screams, “that would be an interesting scene!”
Your video game pieces add a level of detail that the original games don’t have. How do you go about creating that style of art based on a game? How heavily do you reference the game itself?
Depends actually. I generally don’t reference the game a lot. My reference is often a photo or a painting. It’s in the other way. I look at this nice landscape painting and thing, how would Mario look in that style, then I try to do it with my skills! Now, for my frescos series, I’m trying to be a lot more into the fan service and to offer something that fans of the game will really like. The Sonic one for example, really respects the precise graphics of the original game, the tiles etc…
Tell us about your current projects. What are you working on? Any upcoming shows?
I’m finishing the first part of a massive FFVI project, with 24 scenes on a poster to tell the game’s story, or at least evoke its best moments. It’s been really killing me cause it’s very long but it’s worth it I hope. No shows planned for now!
What is the best art advice you have ever received?
I don’t know if I received it actually but I would say “do your own thing!”
What do you like to do for fun?
Play video games when I can, and watch TV shows!
Do you have a favorite video game series? Any upcoming titles that you are excited about?
My favorite series still being relevant would be Street Fighter I guess, and KOF. Also Mario, of course. I’m looking forward to Mario 3D World and MK8! I’m also really curious about next gen graphics, mainly on PS4, because I want Japan to dominate video games again!
What is your most memorable video game experience?
FFVI without a doubt
If you could be a dinosaur with any super power, which would you choose and why?
Hmm… the power to transform into human? Being a dinosaur doesn’t seem really comfortable for sex.
